The News. Watch, or Avoid?

Sometimes I think it would be better if I wrote in isolation, rather than in a world where things happen.

I hate to be on a roll, writing up a storm, and then hear something on the news that sparks another idea. Especially when that idea can't possibly work in the book I am working on.

I was happily writing my cowboy story this week, when that terrible tragedy with the tour boat that got run over by a barge occurred. In the midst of feeling horrible for those people and what that accident must have been like, it popped into my head that if you were a a kid, on a boat like that, with all the other boats helping out- you could easily be kidnapped by one of the "helpers" and if you were young enough, you might not even remember that you didn't belong with these people.
My brain leaped years into the future when a grown up boat-victim would suddenly start recalling tiny things that compelled him or her to go on a quest, finally discovering who he or she really is...

See what I mean? Even in TELLING you about it, I am off on a tangent.
I don't need a writing office. I need a cave.

So been there. Write the idea down and finish your cowboy story.

Ditto what Jerri said. Write down the story idea and place it in the FUTURE STORIES folder on your computer and then finish what you're working on.

I am SO not one of those people who can work on multiple stories at the same time.
