I'd never had to write one before. But I was asked to put one together for Untouched. So, I scoured the internet for examples, hoping that would help. I asked my critique partners, my MORWA members, my husband and anyone else who'd maybe had to write one before for advice--okay, so my husband has never had to write one, but I asked him anyway.
A tagline can make or break a product. Companies have been using them for a long time. Like Nike's Just Do it. Pretty much everyone knows that saying. That's a tagline. How about Got Milk by the California Milk Processor Board. Who hasn't heard that one.
So, how do I write one sentence that would have the same effect? I can't. Not even going try, but I did the best I could. This is what I ended up with.
He came looking for treasure, but what he found was more precious than gold.
Do you have a great tagline you'd care to share? I'd love to see it.

I have a couple of tag lines that actually I came up with. Samhain has someone who does that, but when I first signed with Samhain, they didn't.
After much desperation and many revisions for TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE's tag line, I came up with:
The sheriff has the hots for her prime suspect. What's a girl to do?
Of course Samhain authors still have to come up with a short synopsis including a tag line, and then the marketing person uses that to develop something better. For my erotic western historical, I used Half-dressed and going for naked... as part of my synopsis. My editor wasn't so crazy about it, but it ended up being the tag line anyway.
Those two stories have been best sellers for me.
Boiling my stories down into a single sentence our sound bite is one of the most difficult jobs about being an author. Just sayin'...
I love both of yours, Marie-Nicole! Great job!!
Hi, Jerri.
Just off the top of my head, one I'm thinking about...
How could the best thing that ever happened to her be the worst thing that ever happened to him?
That is awesome, D'Ann!
Thanks, Jerri.
I like D'ann's too! Man, would that be a story!
Thank you, Jerri and Marie-Nicole!
You gave my confidence a boost!
