In the very RWR issue where my "first sale" to an RWA-recognized publisher is announced, there's an article proposing recent e-published authors, who qualified for PAN (RWA's Published Authors Network), be given two years to prove we have sales in excess of $2000 before being kicked back down to PRO status. At least, that's what has been reported by those who have already received their June issue of RWR.
For years I've been told PAN status depended on being published by a RWA-recognized publisher. Now that four electronic publishers have been recognized, it seems the big girls want to change the rules...again. Until now, I've kept my head down, kept my mouth shut, paid my dues. I was recently approved for PAN status. Hooray!
I am a career-focused writer. I quit my daytime job in order to write full time in the pursuit of my dreams. Why do I not need access to information that the NY pubbed authors know? Am I too stupid to understand their issues? When did knowledge or access to knowledge become a dangerous thing? Now I feel like I'm in college and on the verge of being kicked out of the prestigious sorority I just joined.
Or is it about money and market share?
If anyone responds to this post, please do so in a rational, logical and sane manner. The topic is a hot button for many of us, but let's not make this a flame war. Read the RWR articles and provide feedback to those who requested it.

You know, I've been thinking about joining RWA ever since both my epubs were recognized. After hearing this, I'm dang glad I never filled out the application. There's no way I would pay to join a group who's only going to look down their nose at me.
It's irritating, isn't it? I write full time. I can actually pay a few bills from it and it's paying for my trip to Dallas in July. And I'm not even PAN eligible right now! The idea that I am somehow not a professional just blows my mind. I think it's just sour grapes on the part of a vocal minority and hopefully it won't go anywhere.
